This is my first Paul Cleave book, and as a Kiwi writer, I should have dived into his work much earlier (I know—sorry). Whoops! My journey through his storytelling began with the audiobook of Blood Men, and I was intrigued enough to pick up Cemetery Lake, which kicks off his new series, “The Theodore Tate Series.” Currently, there are four books in the series, and I’ve got the first three lined up.
From the get-go, Cemetery Lake plunges you into an intense narrative filled with twists and turns that keep the adrenaline pumping. The story unfolds over about a month, maintaining a rapid pace that never feels forced. Cleave has a knack for layering the plot with clever misdirection, leading readers down one path only to pull the rug out from under them when the truth is finally revealed.
What I appreciate most about Cleave’s writing is its straightforwardness. It mirrors my own style, which makes it feel relatable. Some might argue it leans too heavily into simplicity, but I found this clarity refreshing—it allows the story’s tension and emotions to shine without unnecessary complications.
The main character, Theodore Tate, is a fascinating departure from the archetypal heroic cop. He operates by his own set of rules, often blurring the lines between right and wrong. This moral ambiguity adds depth to his character; even when he makes questionable choices, Cleave manages to craft Tate in a way that makes you empathize with him. His internal struggles and justifications are compelling, and I found myself rooting for him despite his flaws.
As I delved deeper into Tate’s world, I became invested not just in the mystery at hand but also in his personal journey. Cleave’s exploration of themes like redemption, guilt, and the consequences of one’s choices resonates throughout the narrative, making it much more than just a crime thriller.
I can’t wait to dive into the next installments of the series. I’m eager to see how Tate evolves and what challenges lie ahead for him. Cleave’s ability to weave gripping plots with complex characters is a hallmark of his writing, and I’m excited to explore more of his work. If you’re looking for a thrilling read that keeps you on your toes, I highly recommend Cemetery Lake. It’s just the beginning of what promises to be an exhilarating series!
